An overview of multiple DoF magnetic actuated micro-robots

چکیده
This paper reviews the state of the art of untethered, wirelessly actuated and controlled micro-robots. Research for such tools is being increasingly pursued to provide solutions for medical, biological and industrial applications. Indeed, due to their small size they offer both high velocity, and accessibility to tiny and clustered environments. These systems could be used for in vitro tasks on lab-on-chips in order to push and/or sort biological cells, or for in vivo tasks like minimally invasive surgery and could also be used in the micro-assembly of microcomponents. However, there are many constraints to actuating, manufacturing and controlling micro-robots, such as the impracticability of on-board sensors and actuators, common hysteresis phenomena and nonlinear behavior in the environment, and the high susceptibility to slight variations in the atmosphere like tiny dust or humidity. In this work, the major challenges that must be addressed are reviewed and some of the best performing multiple DoF micro-robots sized from tens to hundreds μm are presented. The different magnetic micro-robot platforms are presented and compared. The actuation method as well as the control strategies are analyzed. The reviewed magnetic micro-robots highlight the ability of wireless actuation and show that high velocities can be reached. However, major issues on actuation and control must be overcome in order to perform complex micro-manipulation tasks.

Six-Degrees-of-Freedom Remote Actuation of Magnetic Microrobots
Existing remotely-actuated microrobots powered by magnetic coils far from the workspace exhibit a maximum of only five-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) actuation, as creation of a driving torque about the magnetization axis is not achievable. This lack of orientation control limits the effectiveness of existing microrobots for precision tasks of object manipulation and orientation for advanced medical,...
متن کاملType Synthesis of Low-dof Parallel Robots Based on Screw Theory
In this paper a new procedure for type synthesis of low-DoF parallel robots based on screw theory is presented. The motivation of these work is that for many industrial applications, in particular in the machine-tool field, less than 6 degree of freedom (6-DoF) may be needed to complete the task. For example, for milling operation in the machine-tool domain, the rotation of the platform around ...
متن کاملModeling and Experimental Characterization of an Untethered Magnetic Micro-Robot
Here we present the control, performance and modeling of an untethered electromagnetically actuated magnetic micro-robot. The microrobot, which is composed of neodymium–iron–boron with dimensions 250 m 130 m 10 m, is actuated by a system of six macroscale electromagnets. Periodically varying magnetic fields are used to impose magnetic torques, which induce stick–slip motion in the micro-robot. ...
متن کاملTrajectory tracking of under-actuated nonlinear dynamic robots: Adaptive fuzzy hierarchical terminal sliding-mode control
In recent years, underactuated nonlinear dynamic systems trajectory tracking, such as space robots and manipulators with structural flexibility, has become a major field of interest due to the complexity and high computational load of these systems. Hierarchical sliding mode control has been investigated recently for these systems; however, the instability phenomena will possibly occur, especia...
متن کاملAn Adaptive-Robust Control Approach for Trajectory Tracking of two 5 DOF Cooperating Robot Manipulators Moving a Rigid Payload
In this paper, a dual system consisting of two 5 DOF (RRRRR) robot manipulators is considered as a cooperative robotic system used to manipulate a rigid payload on a desired trajectory between two desired initial and end positions/orientations. The forward and inverse kinematic problems are first solved for the dual arm system. Then, dynamics of the system and the relations between forces/momen...
